Preparations for International Women’s Day in 2012 started by a training for the hospital staff and the Centre for Maternal and Child Health (CPMI) which is integrated into REMA hospital. The training workshop is scheduled for three consecutive days, led by team SERUKA (Step out of the shadow), on the premises of the Paramedical School in Nyamutobo. SERUKA, is a centre that not only focuses on training, but that also takes care of and prevents further victims of violence on women. This workshop focuses on the care for victims of sexual violence.
Further International Women’s Day activities were a visit by Maison Shalom’s social workers to forty-nine women and fifteen old men who are all incarcerated in Ruyigi’s central prison. The visitors brought with them material assistance, such as pagnes for women and blankets for the elderly. In their speeches they voiced their appreciation to the Maison Shalom for all it does for people in distress.They expressed their joy by dancing traditional songs of thanks. The day’s activities finished at 5:00 pm withceremonies organized by local government.
